As a pre-service teacher, I am constantly reflecting on my teaching philosophies and refining my beliefs and practices. In fall of 2013, I conducted a mock interview to see what beliefs I possessed coming into the program. This video was taken in the Fall of 2013, by my "big" (resident from the class of 2014) in UTRPP. |
1. Why did you choose to become a teacher?
I really feel like I was chosen for this profession, I was really shaped by my elementary school teachers to peruse this degree. They really showed me what an exemplary teacher was like and really made me want to pursue this degree.
2. Five years after your students have left your classroom, what do you want them to say about you as a person? About your teaching? About the learning that occurred during their time with you?
I would have personal satisfaction in my job as a teacher if my students walked away after five years saying that I was loving, respectful, and that I really taught them something during our time. I would love for them to be able to look back during our school year and to see their growth, like I see their growth.
3. Why should students learn the content that you teach?
The content that I will teach them is planned, created and fostered for their success. This material is what will create a spring board into their future and produce lovers of learning.
4. How will you know that you have taught a successful lesson? How do you know when your students have learned what you hoped to convey?
I will be able to know that the students understand my lesson when they are able to reproduce the information in their own words and tell another student about what they have learned.
5. If I were a new student in your classroom and asked you, “What do you expect from me?” how would you respond?
I would really expect the new student to really use their best judgment when it comes to respecting others, me, as their teacher, and the classroom as a whole. I would expect them to use their best judgment and apply themselves to their best of their ability when it comes to school work and when it comes to acting their best in my classroom.
6. If I were a parent of a new student and asked you to describe the learning environment in your classroom, how would you respond?
I try really hard to create a classroom environment where we are family and we all love each other and respect each other, and we really meet each other where we are at; so we are all individual learners and we all respect that and know that we are all here for one common thing, to learn.
7. What analogy would you use to describe what you hope to be as a teacher? You might answer the statements: teaching is like a ____________ or teaching is ____________________.
I would say teaching is like any relationship. Like any relationship it requires work, time and care.
