Social Studies Platform
& Resources.
Contrary to popular belief, teaching social studies in a modern k-5 classroom is a simple and enjoyable task. With modern technology and access to an abundance of information and resources 24-7, teachers are able to deliver social studies concepts and teachings to their students in a way never thought of in the past.
In my social studies course this semester I have been exposed to numerous resources, trade books, interactive websites, and engaging lesson ideas all centered around the social studies core standards and themes. These themes include, but are not limited to: perceptions and perspectives in the Social Studies; planning and assessment in the Social Studies; culture, time, continuity, and change; people, places, and the environment; individual development, and identity; individuals, groups, and institutions; power, authority, and governance/civic ideals and practices; production, distribution, and consumption; science, technology, and society; global connections, civic ideals, and practices.
In my classroom, it will be my goal to present my students with a multidisciplinary curriculum. Teaching social studies in my classroom will involve story telling, discovery, inquiry, natural observation, comparison, exploration, and learning. By integrating social studies into my classroom daily, I will ensure that my students will leave my classroom with the necessary skills, knowledge, and understanding of the world around them. While using innovative design, planning and technology, I plan on delivering social studies in a standard-based approach.

Resources.
Check out iCivics!
It's a great resource to use while teaching students about civics and the Constitution. Students can play a game called "Do I have a Right?" This is an interactive game where students can practice their knowledge about the constitution and apply it to real life situations and encounters! This is just an example of one game on the website. The website also has resources for teachers, and you don't have to register or have a log in to access! Check out Kids Zone!
This easy to use website allows students to use data they have collected and create a easy to understand graph. This generator helps students represent data into bar graphs, line graphs, area graphs, and pie graphs. This can be use to analyze data from all subjects, not just math! Check out The Library of Congress!
This is a phenomenal resource of primary and secondary sources to use in your classroom with your kids. This virtual library gives you and your students access to unlimited photographs, newspapers, videos, audio, music, maps, and manuscripts. |
Check out NetTrekker!
NetTrekker is a digital learning resource library with more than 360,000 educator-curated resources, each one tagged, organized, and aligned to state and Common Core standards so that teachers, students, and parents can find just what they need, quickly, and safely. Check out Build Your Wild Self!
This website, by New York Zoos and Aquariums, allows any kid, or kid at heart, to build an aviator inspired by some of their favorite animals. This fun activity lets kids go wild and learn about animals. Check out Harcourt's Geography Glossary!
This website is a great tool for students to get a visual of land and water features. This glossary lets students navigate through countless terms, maps, photos, illustrations, and facts. It even accommodates to learners that needs the words read to them, and this is also great for students in areas like Florida that don't see mountains or other features. |
Check out the Sphere app!
Sphere allows users to take and browse 360 degree, panoramic photos that have the look and feel of a walking tour. This app is an innovative way to bring the world to your students.
